His well-known work in this field is entitled Saracen Archery, which is an English translation and interpretation of an Arabic treatise on archery. Latham has also published several articles on this subject, including “The Archers of the Middle East: The Turco-Iranian Background,” published in 1970. The present study aims to review the content of this article and examine Latham’s views on a neglected aspect of the history of the East. On the one hand, Latham argues that Muslims developed a credible educational system for the instruction of archery skills. This system not only drew upon a rich body of Persian terminology but also derived prestige from the reputation of the Sāsānīan kings in the art of archery. On the other hand, it is argued that archers from the Iranian cultural sphere came to be recognized as some of the system’s most renowned and distinctive masters. A further aim of Latham’s study was to identify evidence of comparable Turkish influences on the archery techniques and practices of Muslims. جان دِرِک لَثِم (1927 – 2005 م)، زبان‌شناس و خاورشناسِ فقید بریتانیایی است که از پیشگامان پژوهش در حوزه تاریخ اجتماعیِ جنگاوری به‌شمار می‌رود. اثر مشهور او در این زمینه کمان‌گیری ساراسن نام دارد که ترجمه و تفسیر انگلیسیِ رساله‌ای عربی با موضوع تیراندازی است. درک لثم، در همین حوزه مقالاتی هم نگاشته است که یکی از آنها تحت عنوان «کمان‌داران خاورمیانه: پس‌زمینه ترکی-ایرانی» در سال 1970م منتشر شده است. در نوشتار حاضر قصد داریم ضمن ارائه گزارشی از محتوای این مقاله، آراء نویسنده آن درباره یکی از ابعاد مغفول تاریخ مشرق‌‌زمین را واکاوی کنیم. لثم بر این باور است که مسلمانان برای تعلیم مهارت‌های تیراندازی، نظام آموزشی معتبری پدید آوردند که علاوه بر برخورداری از گنجینه اصطلاحات پارسی، از جایگاه شاهان ساسانی در هنر کمان‌گیری، کسبِ اعتبار می‎کرده است. از سوی دیگر کمان‌دارانی از حوزه فرهنگی ایران، در زمره اساتید مشهور و صاحب‌سبک این نظام به‌شمار می‌آمدند. هدف دیگرِ لثم از انجام این پژوهش نمایاندن نشانه‌هایی از تأثیرات مشابه ترکان بر فنون و رسوم کمان‌گیریِ مسلمین بوده است. https://jhistory.um.ac.ir/article_48547_69d1b01bf24853798374c5b12508d964.pdf
