History

The journal was founded in the winter of A.S. 1347/A.D.  1969, by the late Dr. Maḥmūd Rāmyār. The first issue was published in celebration of the “Centennial Memorial of Ḥakīm Sabzivārī”, and went by the title: “Nashrīyi-yi Dānishkadi-yi ʿUlūm-i Maʿqūl va Manqūl-i Mashhad”. The journal was founded following Rāmyār’s repositioning from the Rules and Regulations Office of the National Consultative Assembly, to the newly-established ministry of “Science and Higher Education”. He was then appointed as the vice president in administrative and financial matters at the University of Mashhad, soon after taking the role of provost in the faculty of Theoretical and Traditional studies as well. During the three or four years of his work as provost, Dr. Rāmyār made significant contributions to the faculty, including the foundation of this journal. However, this is not to undermine the help of other faculty members in motivating Dr. Rāmyār in this path. Dr. Muḥammad Vāʿiẓ Zādih also put in considerable effort for the publication of the first issues of the journal.

From the outset, the journal was enthusiastically welcomed by the scholars and intellectuals. The late Dr. Aḥmad Ārām mentions in a letter to Dr. Rāmyār after the publication of the first issue: “the journal takes precedence over much of the work published at the University of Mashhad, and this is of course thanks to your great efforts” (Ārām, 255). Professor Sayyid ʿAbdulkarīm Amīrī Fīrūzkūhī, Prof. Sayyid Muḥammad ʿAlī Rużātī, Prof. Riżā Ustādī Tihrānī, and other colleagues have also accompanied the journal with their critical comments and reviews.

The second issue of the journal was published after a three-year interval in the spring of A.S. 1351/ A.D. 1972, this time titled as “Nashrīyi-yi Dānishkadi-yi Ilāhīyāt va Maʿārif-i Islāmī”. The journal was thereafter published regularly as a quarterly until the Spring of A.S. 1358/A.D. 1979, reaching its 28th issue. Dr. Muḥammad Vāʿiẓ Zādih was the Editor-in-Chief of the journal from its earliest days until A.S. 1353/A.D. 1974. Following him, the late Dr. Ghulamriżā Nāfilī assumed the role. Dr. Rāmyār joined the University of Edinburgh in the September of A.S. 1352/A.D. 1973 and was replaced by Dr. ʿAlī Akbar Shahābī. Thereafter the journal underwent some modifications in terms of IfA, so that the articles related to each field were published conjointly and in their specific section. At this point, a section titled “Shi’ite Studies” was added to the journal. Shahābī encouraged scholars to undertake studies in this field, he himself publishing articles on the topic as well.

Following the Islamic Revolution in A.S. 1358/ A.D. 1979 and after the transformation of political systems in Iran, the journal’s publication came to a halt. A halt continuing for the next 15 years, until the year A.S. 1373/A.D. 1995. In A.S. 1372/A.D. 1993, the late Dr. Sayyid Mahdī Șāni’ī (then Dean of faculty) made a successful attempt to resume the journal’s publication, resulting in the announcement of the 29th issue in A.S. 1373/A.D. 1993, directed by Dr. Ghulamriżā Nāfilī. Unfortunately, Dr. Nāfilī suffered a heart condition before the publication of the 30th issue and passed away a few months later. Dr. Maḥmūd Yazdī Muṭlaq, known as “Fāżil” was then appointed as the chief director in-charge of the journal. In A.S. 1376/A.D. 1997, the “Committee for the Evaluation of Academic Journals” (affiliated with the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology) awarded the journal with a scientific-research ranking.

In an effort to make the journal an expert venue in recent years, it was authorized (by the chief director of research at MSRT, according to letter no. 3/4442, dated A.S. 1387.06.06/ A. D. 2008.08.27) to take on four special scopes, with two issues published each year in each field of expertise. Consequently, four special titles are being published since 1387/07/01.

  1. Journal of Fiqh and ʾUūl
  2. Journal of ʿUlūm-i Qurʾān and Ḥadīth
  3. Journal of Falsafih and Kalām
  4. Journal of Tārīkh and Farhang (History and Culture)
