Suggested Steps for Writing a Book Review

  1. Enjoy reading the book avidly in 1-2 months.
  2. Write your review of 1000-2000 words in the Chicago Style. Citations and notes are to be avoided, unless necessary.
  3. Book reviews are usually comprised of four main parts: a) Introduction B) Description 3) Analysis 4) Assessment/Conclusion.
  4. The Introduction section usually contains 100-200 words and alludes briefly to the text’s writer and the literature on the topic.
  5. In the description section, a short synopsis of the work is presented. This should be arranged in accordance with the chapters of the book. Analyses and assessments are to be avoided in this section, and the average word count should be about 400-500.
  6. The analysis section should hint at the themes explores by the author, the status of the work, and its innovations, limitations, and biases. Building on your own expertise and the available literature on the topic, you can illustrate the significance of the text. This section should be written in 400-500 words.
  7. The final section, assessment or conclusion, should reflect your opinion on the work and its weaknesses and strengths. Discuss the reasons behind the publication of the book and whether the author(s) have achieved their goals. It is important to offer constructive criticism in this section. Steer clear of attacking the author or using provocative language. It is recommended to explain how future research can fill in the gaps of current literature. This section should be written in 200-400 words.
